In order to provide proper data to the BLM for mapping inventory you will need to set up your Garmin GPS properly. If you don’t
have a Garmin but have a different type, you can try and set your system up with these parameters or you can borrow one from the
Mapping Group.

Power On the Garmin eTrex by pushing down the 2nd button on the Right Hand Side of the unit. Make sure you have
freshly re-charged batteries or regular batteries. We suggest 2500 Milliamp rechargeable.
- Press the top button on the Right Hand side until you get to the Main Menu
- Select the Set Up Icon (use the joy stick on the top and press down like a mouse)
- Select Units
- Position Format should read: hdddºmm’ss.s” (this will record in lat-long)
- Map Datum should read: NAD83
- Distance/Speed should read: Statute
- Elevation should read: Feet
- Vertical Speed should read: ft/min
- Depth should read: Statute

Press the Top Button on the Right Hand side of the unit to get back to the Main Menu.
Repeat a – b to ensure that you saved your data
- Press the top button on the Right Hand side (Page button) until you get to the Main Menu
- Select Tracks (use the joy stick on the top and press down like a mouse to access the tracks section)
- Next to the “X” is a document button with lines on it, click on that
- It should say Setup Track Log, click on that
- It should say Log Set Up
- Unselect Wrap When Full box.
- Record Method should be set to: Distance Interval should read: 0.01 Miles.

Press the Top Button on the Right Hand side of the unit to get back to the Main Menu.
Repeat a – b to ensure that you saved your data
Recording This is the fun part! This means you are out riding & mapping like a Pro!
- Go to the Main Menu
- Select Tracks

On/Off – this works like a tape recorder, when you are ready to record your favorite song or in this case your favorite
2 Track (Quad or 4x4) or Single Track (Horse/Mountain Bike or Motorcycle single track) Select the ON position. You will
know it is on when the ON symbol is depressed down.

Windows then follow the instructions to download Mapsource.
After downloading the program, use Mapsource to erase the extra tracks, or tracks that double back on themselves. We need a
clear single track line to illustrate the trail you were on. When you are done attach the data file and email to:
