What is the Nevada Wilderness Project?

By Jim Sanford • Special to the MVN • March 14, 2008

*Wilderness is their proposal

Representatives of Nevada's congressional delegation continually stress that the wilderness proposal for Lyon, Mineral and Esmeralda counties hails from the Nevada Wilderness Project and not from any members of that elected delegation. So, who/what is the Nevada Wilderness Project?

A look at their website calls for "Keeping Nevada Wild" and includes maps, a listing of "Our Team," names and info about a board of directors, "What We Do," resources, partners and more. The NWP board features chairman Bret Birdsong of Las Vegas, NV; vice president Brian O'Donnell of Durango, CO; treasurer/secretary Lynn Schlek of Incline Village, NV; and board members Tori King of Las Vegas; Chris Todd of Huntington Beach, CA; Jill S. Heaton of Reno, NV; and Rene Valladares (on leave) of Las Vegas.

"Our Team" includes short bios for eight people, including Mackenzie Banta, born and raised right here in Yerington. Listed as Coalition Partners are the Campaign for America's Wilderness, Friends of Nevada Wilderness, Red Rock Audubon Society, and The Wilderness Society.

The website also lists organizations/foundations "who generously support our efforts to protect Nevada's wilderness." That lists includes the Conservation Alliance, Harder Foundation, Lazar Foundation, Patagonia, Inc., Peradam Foundation, REI, Franklin J. Koch Animal and Wildlife Charitable Fund, Norcross Foundation, Pew Charitable Trusts, American Wilderness Coalition, Tortuga Foundation, Wilburforce Foundation, The Wilderness Society, Dancing Tides Foundation and Nevada Community Foundation.

Business supporters include a lengthy list, topped by Pepsi and Wild Oats and including BlueStone, Buenos Grill, Columbia, Cope & Guerra, Escape Adventures, Granite Chief, Great Basin Brewery, Grounds for Change, Kelty, Las Bussola, Lotus Designs, Miniclip, Montrall, New Belgium Brewery, Jack Johnson, Yoga Lake, CapGroup Financial, Petzi, Porter's Ski & Sport, Sierra Avalanche Center, Sierra Garden Club, Sky's the Limit Climbing School and Guide Service, Silver Sage Center for Family Medicine, South Bay Ford, Taqueria Tepatitian, TMS Environmental Systems, Inc., The Back Country, Totally Board, Truckee Meadows Herbs, Vegas Valley Heating & Air, Ventura Wine Co., Sundance Bookstore, and Reno eNVy.

Note from PNMTA Webmaster: Shortly after this article was written the Nevada Wilderness Project removed their list of sponsors and replaced with a simple "We thank all of our sponsors". We question why did they feel the need to hide their sponsors from the public? Aren't they proud to sponsor the NWP? Or did the sponsors themselves want to hide their support of the NWP from the public?
