Next Meeting Tuesday April 7th is very important as we’ll be planning the final details of the cleanup April
18th and 19th.
Federal activity -
-
The BLM has a new district office manager for Carson City – Chris McAlear. He’s been on the job for about 6 weeks.
Nate called and welcomed him to the area with an introduction to our club and all the great things we’ve accomplished over
the past 10 years. There has also been a change in the organization at the office where the management responsibility is
broken into two areas (east and west) The Pine Nuts are in the Sierra Front (western) section and is managed by Linda Kelly
who reports to Chris. The PNMTA looks forward to a continued productive relationship with the BLM.
-
Endangered Species act reform is on hold.
-
USFS has been having trouble cooperating with Elko county to the point that Elko officially withdrew cooperating agency status.
Word on the street is that this was an effective tactic to get the attention of the Forest Service. They are now actually
listening to the folks in Elko county. We will need to pay attention to this in the future as it is clear that the USFS wishes
to close a lot of existing roads.
State Activity –
-
SJR 2 has been introduced Senate Natural Resource Committee. It asks our Federal Congressional Delegation to reclaim wilderness
study lands that have been “studied” and found not suitable for wilderness designation. Wilderness study area is a designation
that puts land in limbo until it is either declared wilderness or not. A loophole in the system is that there is no mechanism
to get out of the study area designation. It also asks our Congressional Delegation, in the future to follow the established definition
of wilderness when defining new wilderness areas, and to always get the agreement of local governments before making any proposals.
PNMTA supports this legislation!
-
SCR 6 has been introduced by Senator Mark Amodei. Urges nevada counties to define and catalog all county roads that cross public
lands managed by the Federal Gonvernment. This is the first step in insuring that administrative decisions by the BLM and USFS don't
close these roads. PNMTA supports this legislation!
Next Big Club Activity
-
Cleanup April 18th and 19th. This is a huge deal! We are holding our first ever two day event. Please come
on either day to help clean up the Brunswick and Sand Canyon areas. There will be food and prizes and possibly even live music!
Goodness Gracious, how can you miss it!?!? Get on out there!
-
Mt. Bike poker run and barbecue at Nate’s house April 25th. Nate is hosting the 5th annual mt. bike poker
run next month. It’s a super fun event and is a good chance to meet people from the Alta Alpina Cycling Club. Come to the next
meeting for more details.
The Great Basin Institute is preparing a proposal to collaborate with the PNMTA and manage the trail system in the Pine Nuts.
It will be a couple months before the proposal is ready. Stay tuned.
Treasurer report – no change – we still have about 3k in the bank. Terry McT has collected some donations for the cleanup, but they
have not been deposited yet.
Banners – Rita is going to get us some small foam core backed signs to give supporting businesses and also a new banner to replace
ours as it is getting worn. Estimated cost is a couple hundred bucks.
Website – Pat Schmid has done a stupendous job upgrading our website. Thanks Pat! We are back at www.pnmta.org after being
www.nv-trails.com for a few years. The nv-trails domain is still our and has a notice that we’ve moved.
Mapping - Again, we are trying to gather all GPS data so we can show the BLM all the trails and preserve our access. Please send any
data you have to Pat Schmid at kdxkawboy@aol.com in .CSV format.
Dual Sport Ride – We’ve discussed doing this as a fundraiser. It’s a great idea, but the permitting process will put us out into
sometime next year. Pat Schmid is looking for volunteeers to help make this happen.
